Program Director- Huntington Park

Job Description:

Location: Huntington Park, CA with extensive travel in L.A. County

FLSA status: Non-exempt, full time 36.25 hours M-F –some weekends

Reports to: Deputy Director of Operations

 

 

Summary: This position has responsibility for oversight of over 100 peer support groups throughout the L.A. County.   He or she manages all part time Supporters in each of the service areas of the County.  He or she is responsible for meeting contractual requirements of an L.A. County Department of Mental Health contract.

Essential Functions: This person ensures contractual requirements are met by ensuring billing paperwork for all groups is correct and submitted on time.  This person has excellent organizational and logistical skills.  She or he is responsible for training staff on contractual requirements and providing coaching for supporters and volunteer peer group facilitators on the core competencies of peer support.

  • Work activities may include any or all of the following:
  • This person organizes monthly meetings for staff and facilitators, provides individualized feedback for staff and volunteer facilitators to develop their peer support skills.
  • Attends 5 groups per week to observe the functioning of the group.  Provides consistent feedback to the supporter and the facilitator and completes an evaluation form for each group and submits it to the Deputy Director of Operations for review.   
  • This person works with the Deputy Director of Operations to implement a new system for program evaluation.   He or she works in collaboration with the Deputy Director of Operations to monitor program quality systematically and along several dimensions, including first hand observation as well as through the use of quality assurance surveys
  • This person works with the Deputy Director of Operations to design and deliver trainings, coaching, positive affirmations and disciplinary actions based on the results of quality assurance data.   
  • This position is responsible for the on-boarding of new volunteers which includes coordinating with the billing department.
  • This person monitors billing against target goals and oversees the opening of new support groups in response to need.
  • This person has excellent networking skills and builds relationships with mental health centers, wellness centers, other community agencies, and local governmental advisory, oversight and advocacy groups in the arena of mental health throughout Los Angeles County.
  • This person draws on their network of contacts to start new support groups, recruit new volunteers, and as avenues for outreach on Project Return’s wide array of services and supports.
  • This person has excellent communication skills and can articulate the mission of Project Return and its services to a wide variety of audiences.
  • This person has excellent research skills.  
  • Must have a desire to work with individuals impaired by extreme distress / mental illness and believe in an individual’s ability to recover from disabling mental distress.   
  • Must verbalize an initial and ongoing understanding of environmental variables that may present while performing administrative tasks and/or providing direct services as an PRPSN employee (i.e. individuals presenting at the agency in extreme emotional states).
  • Must exhibit good personal judgment, a non-bias attitude, sensitivity, and discretion when dealing with other individuals. Must demonstrate the skills and ability to “work and play well with others” interacting with co-workers, program participants, family members and community partners effectively and responding appropriately when experiencing interpersonal conflict with others.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Deputy Director of Operations.
  • Models PRPSN approach, mission and core values in all communication and correspondence.

Skills:

Education
HS diploma or GED required – Certificate(s) of training in peer support required.

Experience
Knowledge of or experience with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health billing procedures preferred.  Position is excellent for an individual who desires to enter/progress in the public health or mental health arena.

Other Position Requirements:

  • The position is reserved for an individual with lived experience of psychiatric disability or mental illness.  
  • Experience working in the mental health field or other social services. 
  • Peer Advocate Certificate/Training and demonstrated experience in peer support, peer advocacy or self-help.  Obtaining a Peer Specialist certificate within 6 months will be required for any candidate that doesn’t currently have one.     
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout Los Angeles County.  Class C driver’s license and clean driving record.  Proof of valid automobile insurance and ability to be insured by Project Return’s liability insurance.
  • Flexible schedule which may include some weekends and holidays.  
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.  MS Access and PowerPoint highly desired.  
  • Experience working with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds and with varied skills/education.
